Source: pixabay.com A 500-seat bingo hall in Barrow is to finally open today, Saturday 7th September. In a saga closely followed by the BingoDaily team, after months of work progressing and a big June 7th reveal, we are delighted to see the new Opera Bingo in Barrow finally open.
Derelict Building Transformed into State-of-the-art Bingo Hall
GCL Leisure based in Workington already owns three other bingo venues in Cumbria. The company transformed the former Kwik Save into a state of the art bingo hall after the supermarket building lay derelict for over a decade.
Head of Operations at GCL Leisure; Daryl Davidson said of the new bingo venue:
“We came to see the building around two years ago and knew it would be a lot of work.
“But we thought it would be a perfect place to open up a site.
“It’s in the town centre and we were already having a lot of people from Barrow travel to our other sites.”
The transformation of the former Kwik Save building started in October last year. Plans were submitted to the Barrow Council for the derelict site. Since then, GCL Leisure has been working hard to redevelop the site, holding meetings and consulting with the Barrow locals.
GCL Managing Director, Nick Smith said:
“What makes us different to other bingo halls is that we are a really community-focused space. It’s somewhere people can go and be social.”
Test games have already been held at the venue with members already signed up. Also invited were residents from the retirement complex opposite the venue. According to local reports, the new Opera Bingo venue has an ‘industrial feel' to the decor. The walls are adorned with old photographs of the town.
As well as a separate lounge available for group bookings, there will be food and drink served and two bingo games played at the Holker Street venue every day.

Doors open at 12 pm today (Saturday). It joins Apollo Bingo in Hollywood Park as Barrow's other bingo venue.
