South London Lockdown Bingo Brings the Laughs

Home » South London Lockdown Bingo Brings the Laughs

Two actors from South London have been providing some lockdown cheer by hosting weekly games of ‘lockdown bingo'.

Actor and street entertainer Mike Raffone, assisted by John Whelan, from Southwark Playhouse’s People’s Company to keep the S17 postcode entertained with ‘madcap' and ‘rip-roaring' games of online bingo.

Every Wednesday via Facebook the event is streamed live and is both free to play and free to watch, (donations are encouraged). Billed as the ‘perfect antidote to the stuck indoors blues’, ‘rip-roaring’, and ‘the maddest online bingo show in town’, the weekly event even includes prizes!

Having gained popularity in the Southwark area, players have joined the events from as far afield as New Zealand.

As well as the lovable games of bingo, the People’s Company has hosted a good ol' Cockney Knees Up, a local history quiz with the Walworth Society, a sing-a-long. Saturdays also see the People's Company host an online cabaret show via Zoom.

John Whelan told the Southwark News:

“People love the bingo and tell me it’s the highlight of their week,”

“It’s a social event and we’ll carry on as long as people need to shield at home.

“Working with Mike Raffone has been great, it’s a way for us at the People’s Company to continue being creative, and give something back to the community even when our events are cancelled or pushed back.

“We all need a giggle and science has shown that laughter helps relieve stress and tension and supports your immune system!”

The shows are held every Wednesday at 7pm.
