Rain stops play is normally associated with summer sports like cricket and tennis. However, rain indeed stopped play for patrons at Mecca Bingo Hartlepool on Sunday after a thunderstorm and some good old North East rain saw water pouring through a leak in the roof.

A spokesperson for Mecca Bingo confirmed that around 150 customers were evacuated from the club at around 6.15 p.m.

A notice was posted by the club on Sunday evening, saying:

“Due to circumstances out of our control, we have had to close tonight's session. Sunday, September 10. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

Then today (Monday), a new notice was posted on social media and in the club, saying:

“The club closed at 6.15 pm yesterday. Approximately 150 customers were in the club. Everyone was evacuated safely, and nobody was hurt. The club is due to reopen this evening.”

A video of the water leaking through the ceiling was captured by a patron and posted in the local newspaper.

Business as Usual

In an updated post on Monday afternoon, the popular bingo club announced it was reopening. The notice read:

“We would like to inform you that as of 4.30 pm today, the club will be opening for this evening's session, and usual business will resume.

“We thank all our customers for your patience.”
