Despite reporting a highly celebrated turnaround in fortunes the other week, the word in the UK bingo news scene is that Mecca Bingo Hanley could well close in the upcoming weeks.

According to local reports, a proposal has been put forward to close the Stoke-on-Trent bingo venue as early as this month.

Mecca bosses are apparently in consultation with the 17 members of staff at Mecca Bingo Hanley which has been on Octagon Retail Park, for over a quarter of a century. It was built after Edinburgh-based Morrison Developments had purchased the former Wades site from the council in 1995 in a reported £8 million deal.

“A Difficult Decision”

A spokesperson for the Rank Group PLC- owned UK bingo operator said:

“Following a review of our venues, a proposal to close our club on Octagon Retail Park next month is currently being discussed. It’s a difficult decision and not one we are taking lightly.

“We’re in consultation with the 17 employees at the venue and we’ll let our team and guests know as soon as a decision is finalised. Whatever the outcome we hope to keep as many of our employees within the business as possible.”

Despite there being no official statement yet from the bingo and casino operator, and despite Mecca Bingo reporting a sizable increase in the number of people visiting its bingo halls, the future of Mecca Bingo Hanley looks nothing other than bleak.

The closure of the popular bingo hall in Hanley would mean that the nearest Mecca Bingo venues left are those in Crewe and Burton.
