The last remaining bingo hall in Scunthorpe could make way for self-storage units following a planning application submitted to the local council.
The Buzz Bingo Scunthorpe on Brigg Road was previously a Gala Bingo club until its rebranding in 2018. A popular bingo venue, it survived the big Buzz Bingo cull during the pandemic, which saw 26 Buzz Bingo venues close their doors forever. However, doubts are growing over its future.
The planning application, submitted to North Lincolnshire Council just a few days ago, was made by Storage (Scunthorpe) Ltd, a company based in Cheshire and set up just a few months ago. Should the application be approved, it would see the bingo hall fully stripped and converted into a storage unit facility, which, according to the developer's statement, would see a mixed clientele:
“The customers vary and are predominantly domestic and small business users who require additional space around the home or business.”
Just three full-time staff are expected to be taken on should the storage facility be granted planning permission. A stark contrast to the double-figure jobs currently employed by the bingo hall, that would be lost with its closure.
Open “For the Foreseeable Future”
When approached, a spokesperson for Buzz Bingo, the UK's largest retail bingo operator, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS):
“Buzz Bingo Scunthorpe remains open and welcoming people to play bingo.
“There are currently no plans to close the club in the foreseeable future, and we’ll keep colleagues and customers updated if there are any developments.”
Despite the application being just a few days old, there have already been multiple objections from the local community. According to the local newspaper, one objector said:
“A storage facility would not add benefit to the community and there is ample waste ground to build one elsewhere in the town”.
BingoDaily will update the story once further information on the future of Buzz Bingo Scunthorpe is known.
