The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has published a new 5 point plan for 2019-2020.  The UKGC was founded in September 2007 with the aim to keep crime out of gambling and to protect the vulnerable.

The released plan details five essential priorities the UKGC embodies. The UKGC regulates the online gambling market, also giving direction and information concerning how to create a fair and safe gambling environment.

Neil McArthur, Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission, said:

“We put consumers at the heart of our approach, which requires us to strike a balance between the enjoyment people get from gambling and the risks that gambling can present. Managing those risks is not just the responsibility of the individual consumer. That is why we assess risks by looking at the providers of gambling, the products that are offered and the places in which people gamble.”

The five strategic milestones for 2019-2020 are:

1. Protect the Interests of Consumers.

The UKGC will work to improve alternative dispute standards by requiring operators to use only those who will meet their high standard, upgrade the UKGC website to increase accessibility on all devices, begin consumer analysis to better assist consumer decision making and aid in harm prevention.

They will also reassess consumer protection practices on Category C and D machines.

2. Prevent harm to consumers

One of the UKGCs main pillars is protecting consumers and the public from any harm resulting from gambling.

A new strategy will be rolled out, replacing outdated shared arrangements with operators and advertisers.

The UKGC will also review the entire industry's current funding of prevention and treatment initiatives. This will require more involvement from the UKGC on the development of games themselves.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) who help regulate advertising in the UK, will also work in partnership with the UKGC to assist in protecting young and vulnerable people.

3. Raising standards in the gambling market

Using a variety of methods the UKGC aims to increase awareness and standards in the gambling industry.

Know Your Customer (KYC) and other initiatives will continue to be developed, as well as the overall oversight infrastructure by supporting the UK government in promoting its procedures.

4. Optimise returns to good causes from lotteries

The National Lottery has generated over £49 billion for good causes. With competition for the next lottery licence emerging, the UKGC aims to ensure the licence has a strong focus on creating a safe and beneficial offering.

Once the initial details are finalised, they will build engagement through a competition for the next lottery licence.

5. Improve the overall regulations

In a continually developing marketing, the UKGC must also develop internally to ensure its strategies and up to date and effective.

To ensure a safe and fair gambling experience, the UKGC will perform more consultations with stakeholders, devise new strategies and ensure even more support is available for consumers.
