The building that housed the Mecca Bingo in Taunton, Somerset has been sold to Somerset West and Taunton Council in a deal worth over £2 million pounds.

The historic Gaumont Palace Theatre building in Corporation Street, located in the heart of the town has been bought by Somerset West and Taunton Council for £2.1 million.

The good news for bingo fans is that for now, the building will remain operational as a bingo hall. The council has said that the rent received from the bingo hall will not only cover the cost of the building's purchase but also provide additional income that will be used to deliver other services.

The executive member for assets and economic development for Somerset West and Taunton Council said of the purchase of the Grade II listed building:

“SWT is investing in a range of assets as part of its commercial investment strategy to help generate income to protect services and fund new projects

“The council undertakes thorough and robust analysis to support this kind of investment decision, and has carefully considered the risks involved while achieving a good return on investment for the benefit of the local communities we serve.”

The BingoDaily team will be following the fortunes of Mecca Bingo Taunton and to see if indeed the venue will stay open as a bingo hall.
