The UK Gambling Commission has made it known that it will be mandatory for all online gambling sites to support and integrate their websites with GamStops self-exclusion scheme by the end of March 2020.
What is GamStop?
GamStop is a service provided for free, that allows gamblers in the UK to self-exclude from all the sites registered on GamStop at the touch of a button. Customers who register with GamStop and impose a self-exclusion upon themselves will then be unable to log in to any of their gambling accounts on sites that are linked to the system.
What does this mean for operators?
The UK Gambling Commission’s new ruling will mean that every single:
- Online Bingo site
- Online Slots site
- Online Casino site
- Sports betting site
who hold a UK gambling licence will have to integrate their website with GamStop or risk facing a penalty, or losing their gambling licence by the end of March.
Culture Minister. Helen Whatley commented: “By making it a regulatory requirement for all online gambling websites licensed in Great Britain to sign up to GamStop, I am confident that people who have taken the significant step to opt-out of gambling will be well supported, alongside a wide range of other tools.”
How popular is GamStop?
More than 100,000 people across the UK currently use GamStop’sGamStop’s service, and it is considered to be one of the most extensive self-exclusion schemes available to UK customers.
How does it work?
It blocks players from signing up to new sites, blocks all gaming marketing materials sent and received by the user, and blocks access to the users online gambling accounts.
